While I don’t have an external group that I meet to celebrate fandoms to be thankful for, I have a list of fandoms and communities I believe have affected my life in different ways for different reasons, and for them I am thankful.
Whedonite Community: Watching Buffy introduced me to many things I came to enjoy as an adult, and in general just that culture that came with it. I followed Joss Whedons work like any fellow Whedonite, and loving every minute of it. Joss Whedon inspired me to try writing, and explore character development. I admit I’m not very good at it, but to be inspired to do something is still a reason many of us do anything.
Gilmore Girls: What was better than watching Gilmore Girls when it was airing, is re-watching Gilmore Girls and seeing the growth of the characters. Along with seeing many actors that appear in many movies and TV shows I enjoy today, it’s a treat to see them early in their careers. Extremely thankful for the Netflix that will be continuing the canceled series and hopefully give fans some closure.
Lost Community: Oh, Lost, this was seriously an intense show. People got so passionate and crazy about it in ways that I’ve never experienced from a TV show before. I joined a board, and was completely addicted to the mystery of the island, and solving those mysteries. While many do go unanswered and the show ended in a way that made many fans angry, I have to be thankful for giving us a show to be passionate about to join a community of people to discuss it. I remember a few co-workers this was all we talked about, it was fun. I still hope one day to visit Hawaii and do a LOST tour!
The Walking Dead: Being thankful for The Walking Dead is a little personal, and I think it can be explained with a little story. My family and I were having Chinese food in my apartment a few years ago, and out of no where my mom just yells something about ‘they better not kill Daryl this season!” My brother and I tell her to calm down and the three of us talk about TWD and Daryl as normal, then my dad just gets frustrated without knowing anything about what we’re talking about and says, “Who the hell is Daryl?!” I think it was later that week he sat down and marathoned all the episodes until he was caught up. Now it’s like a family thing. He even bought himself a Walking Dead wallet. The same thing happened with Breaking Bad, sorta, ha-ha. Also, my Walking Dead drinking game was created early in the series because a group of friends would treat it as an event. It’s the zombie show that just brings people together.
Blogging Community: While I’m still a new blogger, I love having somewhere to go to share my thoughts and read other blogs and become inspired to create something. I want this to grow into something amazing and I’m grateful I was brave enough to start it. I have a few winter themed posts I’m writing, along with a couple nerdy ones.
